Movie - North Country

Sexual harrassment is a big problem everywhere, federal acts and some other laws do work, but whenever someone wants to use them, there are struggles and difficulties.  For example, victims have to collect evidence to prove themselves, while the beasts sit and wait to see if there are enough evidences being presented.  Plus the doubts of the public, defenses on the court, listen to and knowing all those wrongly expressed, intentionally spread rumors; the whole process is a torture.  Pity, no place on the world at this moment can guarantee 100% harrassment free to women.

It's unfair that so far to my observation, many sexual harrassment victims are in average quite good looking females.  Being pretty is not a crime, but to bear this pressure is really unfair.  In movie "North Country", Emily was rapped by her teacher in an excuse -- after school observation.  I recall an elementary school teacher of mine has tried the same trick to make me stay after school, for no reason.  I still remember, one day I was informed that I have to stay in classroom after school tomorrow; fortunately I told my dad about it, and the next day, my dad arrived a few minutes after all students have left the room, he stood there until my teacher said I can leave.  For years I never figure out why I received such request, I am not a trouble maker, never offend any regulations.  Then as I grow up, I realized how dangerous I have been and how my responsible dad protected me.  If my dad hadn't stood there waiting, I'd probably experience some terrible things which I don't want to imagine now.   That elementary teacher is notorious for harrassing female students who have breasts; he would use excuses like "checking the front pocket" and rub his hand on the girl's breasts.  We girls sat in a group and we all witnessed him doing that.

You must wonder how come nobody reported him to school.  It's a cultural thing and children issue.  First, some parents (the labor class especially) thought school authority will never give them a shit on the complain, cuz they don't have backgrounds.  Pity, it's true at that time.  Second, children were afraid to tell their parents, and not knowing where else to seek help.  That was 20 years ago, we were then categorized as the "developing country", self-protection and human rights concepts were not well educated to the public.  Moreover, the one who makes the complain will be severely questioned first by the authority to make sure it's not a lie; how many victims have extra energy to handle that?   So, many students graduated before us, we graduated, and then that beast went on to other female children.   Years later, I heard one of the parents finally protested to the principal, it's on the newspaper, the principle responded, "That is a very serious accuse to a hard working teacher, we need more time to invetigate."  "Bull shit!" I thought, if they knew how many girls graduated with a shadow in our mind, a group of victims and witnesses are out there, that beast should be expelled immediately.  No news have been followed up, guess the authorities had it covered well.  For shame.

It was not until last year or so, the anti-sexual harrassment act has been passed in Taiwan.  Some women successfully sued their boss or colleagues, with much struggle for sure.  Some men are still holding attitude against so, claiming some women are just being too sensitive or "no sense of humor",  I'll give them finger on that.  Such "humor" is not being appreciated, and we are not excited about anyone touching our body without permission.

Charlize Theron is a beautiful and brillant actress.  Last night when I was watching the movie, many many thoughts went through and she's really triggering the issue of being "pretty, attractive, feminine and persistant."   Again I would address, "It's not a girl's fault to be born beautiful", it should be a gift; unfortunately that gift is sometimes misunderstood by people, especially by men.  Charlize had that clearly shown in the movie.  I am happy that she has successfully made her way into Hollywood, she's talented and hard working, really deserves the fame.

Too many to write, my wrists sour, gonna stop here.
